Dear Journalist,
Thank you for your interest in Saving Iceland, and the threat of heavy industry to the Icelandic wilderness.
As you are visiting this year´s SI camp or may want to visit it, we would like to explain a few short points related to how we are working with the media this year.
Spokespeople
We have decided to specifically designate a number of Saving Iceland activists to work with and talk to the media. These people will give or arrange interviews and liaise with media at the camp and at actions and co-ordinate our dealings with the media.
This has the benefit for you that you know you will be dealing with people who are knowledgeable about the issues in Iceland, and for us that other Saving Iceland activists can concentrate on the running of the camp and on taking the direct action that is needed to protect our environment.
Thus people at the camp and at actions will always refer you to these spokespeople / media liaisons. If there are no spokespeople available when you are visiting, please contact them by phone. Unfortunately it is not possible to talk to you if there are no spokespeople available, so it is advisable to make an appointment before visiting. Phone numbers are listed below.Presence at the camp
Please keep the following points in mind:
- When arriving, please identify yourself as a journalist so you can receive information and assistance from our media liaisons.
- You are welcome to film or photograph outside, but please do not take close ups of meetings.
Visitors to the camp, including journalists, are requested not to go into the marquees and tents, and filming and photography inside is not allowed.- Please do not sit in on any meetings.
The motivations behind our media policy, are that we are a small group and want to focus on organising direct action. We have regular meetings, because all our decisions are made by consensus as we have no leaders. By having this media policy we can effectively organise our camp and actions while at the same time assisting you as best we can.
Also, some activists have had negative experiences with media, where in not respecting their privacy or misrepresenting their opinion or motivation. We have been accused of everything from being terrorists to being paid by some global, extremely rich, conspiracy giving us a ´bonus´ every time we climb in a crane! In reality, we are ordinary people from very diverse backgrounds who are here because they care about the earth and those that inhabit it.
If you would like to know more about our personal motivations, we suggest you have a look at the declaration that was made at last year´s Saving Iceland conference in Hotel Hlid, Olfus (online or in our magazine Voices of the Wilderness).Please also note that some people may wish to hide their faces. This is not because they have anything to hide from you, but because many people have a private life, career or family that they have put on hold in order to do what they feel is important. Sometimes they do not want to negatively influence their private life by appearing in media and thus they do not want to be recognisable. We appreciate your understanding.

Hvers vegna mótmælið þið ekki í suður Ameríku þar sem þúsundir km2 eru ruddir og brendir árlega.
Hvers vegna mótmælið þið ekki þar sem þess er þörf, mengun og nátúrispilling er minst hér í heiminum öllum. ´
:) þetta er nánast findið,.Á íslandi er verið að vinna úr hreinni Orku.
það er ekki til land í heiminum þar sem hægt er að nýta orku úr 100% hreina orku og sjálfbæra. 90% af allri orku í Evrópu er hún unnið úr kolum oliju og kjarnorku. sama er í N Ameríku. hvað varðar Hellisheiði þá komið þið ´því miður of seinnt og mér sínist öllum vera slétt sama um ykkur,. haldið áfram í partýa þarna uppfrá en passið að skemma ekki mosan og grótið þarna upp frá og ekki menga með úrgangi þið eru kanski með feðaklósett ha ha..
Anton… Saving Iceland mótmælir ekki einungis eyðileggingu á íslenskri náttúru, þú myndir kannski komast að því ef þú læsir eitthvað af efni heimasíðunnar áður en þú fullyrtir eitthvað í líkingu við þetta.
Saving Iceland bendir á samhengið milli þess sem er að gerast hér á landi og annars staðar í heiminum; samhengið milli þess að eyðileggja umhverfi sitt og drepa, pynta og koma illa fram við fólk. Saving Iceland bendir á stóra samhengið og hvers vegna það er þess virði að berjast hér á landi, rétt eins og annars staðar.
Sömu fyrirtækin og eru hér á landi standa að umhverfis- og mannréttindabrotum út um allan heim, sérstaklega í þriðja heiminum. Þú gætir t.d. kynnt þér upphaf álframleiðslu, þ.e. báxítgröft, en 80% af honum fer fram í þriðja heiminum og veldur því að menningarleg þjóðarmorð eiga sér stað. Það er t.d. hægt að fræðast um báxítgröft og afleiðingar hans á Jamaíka, Indlandi og í Afríku. Hér er ein um Indland gjörðu svo vel: https://www.savingiceland.org/?p=602&language=en
Þú getur líka lesið þig til um mannréttindabrot í Alcoa verksmiðjum í Honduras, þar sem einstaklingar þurfa að vinna langar og erfiðar vaktir og geta með tíu mínútna fyrirvara verið skipað að vinna sex tíma í viðbót; ef ekki… verður það rekið. Sérstök leyfi þarf til þess að fara á klósettið, sem má ekki gerast oftar en tvisvar á dag nema í tilfelli kvenna á túr, en þá þurfa þær að girða niðrum sig og sanna að þannig sé mál með vexti. Bein tengsl eru milli álframleiðslu og morða á saklausu fólki í Írak, Afganistan og fleiri löndum, því álfyrirtækin vinna flest með hergagnaframleiðendum og herum landa. Fyrirtækin eru í beinum tengslum við stríðsrekstur og eru stolt af því. Svo er reyndar fyndið að þú skulir minnast á það í lokin að Saving Iceland eigi að passa sig á því að eyðileggja ekki mosann og grjótið á Hellisheiði og menga ekki með úrgangi. Skemmtilega þversagnarkennt að halda því fram að framkvæmdir Orkuveitu Reykjavíkur séu ekki mengandi en tjaldbúðir nokkra einstaklinga séu það.
Og varðandi mengun vegna úrgangs ættir þú (eins og reynda hver einasta manneskja) að athuga hversu mengandi neyslumenning okkar er, hversu eyðileggjandi þessi kúltúr er… og finna raunverulega lausn á vandamálinu.
